With just one week to showcase the finest Korean design to a global audience, brands broke with tradition – showcasing gender neutral collections for both men and women alike. Bringing boundary breaking unisex design to the forefront, the likes of Blindness and Munn proved that style has no gender, flip-flopping fabrics and androgynous styles between a pick n’ mix line-up of slim, sallow-faced models. Embellished, cropped and oversized, it may have seen like a one size fits all affair, but nothing could be further from the truth – with many prolific designers stating that gender neutral is the future of fashion – Case in point, Blindness’ powder pink puffer coats and Babushka silk headscarves at 87MM.
Streetwear Backlash
Somewhat criticised with their fandom obsession with streetwear and loud logos, this season saw designers purposefully distance themselves from sportswear. Turning to urban tailoring and deconstructed designs, fine fabrics and technically superior cuts sorted the men from the boys and reigned in a new era for prêt à porter in the Korean capital. Refining their style sensibilities with a nouvelle vague approach to cohesive collections and daring design, previously street wear enamoured brands like Fleamadonna and Pushbutton turned a proverbial leaf, showcasing a selection of sartorial fancies with a crowd-pleasing allure.
